Biopsies
If a skin lesion or unusual mole is noticed by a doctor during a skin check or consult, they may recommend a biopsy is performed on it. A biopsy consists of removing a portion or the entire skin lesion to be tested. The skin sample is sent to the laboratory where testing is conducted by scientists and doctors who look at the cells under a microscope and help distinguish if the skin lesion is cancerous. If so, an excision may be required to take place.
The procedure is straightforward and complete information and comfortability with the process is ensured before it’s commenced. Local anaesthetic is administered under the skin of the area which is being biopsied, this takes a few minutes to be effective. The area is cleaned well to minimise the risk of wound infection and it is ensured that the area is number before the procedure begins. A small sharp instrument (like a corer) is then used to obtain the sample. Following this, if required, the wound will be closed with stiches or a steri strip. A follow-up appointment will be booked to discuss the results and further management if needed.
